2011 OBC Grand Prix cancelled

photo courtesy OBC. click to visit OBC siteThis just in from the OBC website:

Regrettably, I have to announce the cancellation of the 2011 Ottawa Bicycle Club Grand Prix, which was scheduled for July 16, 2011. The cancellation is due to construction to repair a road collapse approximately 1.5 km from the start/finish area.

The Ottawa Bicycle Club is still looking at hosting a racing event on July 16, 2011. Please watch the club's website (www.ottawabicycleclub.ca) over the next couple of weeks as we finalize the details.

OBC Grand Prix race report, by Peter Tregunno

You may have seen the official results and news release following the OBC GP up over at Canadian Cyclist, but here at ottawabikes we're lucky to have gotten the inside scoop from Peter Tregunno, one of the principal organizers of the event. Thanks Peter for letting us know what it's like for you to put on the biggest bike racing event in Ottawa.

Usually, I'm in the pack on the start line, waiting for the show to begin. But for one weekend a year, I get to be on the other side - giving the start rather than taking it. Here's what the week leading up to the Grand Prix is like for me as the race organizer.

  • Saturday - get out for a ride 'cause it's the last good one for a week. Ride through the Park on the way home, things are looking good.
  • Sunday - check the on-line registration. We're sitting at 160, which is low with 3 days to the close of registration. If the numbers are below a particular level, I know the OBC's going to loose money. The magic number is way above 160! Start to worry. Get the database set up for all of the various forms (sign on, riders by name, riders by number, riders by category, riders by hair colour). Discover that everything I set up last year doesn't work with my new laptop. Argh!

OBC Grand Prix, July 17th

click to go to online registration website

Online and paper-based registration is open. Reminder that there will be no registration beyond July 14th.

Cribbed this from Trirudy's post today:

Just a note - the OBC's 13th annual Grand Prix is running Saturday, July 17. Registration is open until July 14th at 11:59pm -http://www.eventsonline.ca/events/obc

All of the race details are at http://www.ottawabicycleclub.ca/grandprix

New to road racing? Consider the novice categories.

Don't have a cycling license (UCI license)? No problem, but you'll have to buy a "one day" license at registration kit pickup (cost should be about $10) (Except for the Senior 1/2 category which is for licensed racers only)

Come out and test yourself on "the loop"! Give the roadies a run for their money!

I can't make any promises - but the weather forecast is looking better than last year's downpour...
